Baskervilles

The Hound of the Baskervilles. McClure, Phillips & Co. 1902 first edition. Published March, 1902, R on copyright page. Illustrated not stated on title page. Red boards with white type have rubbing, soiling, edge wear, loss of type in spots, spine is age toned, type completely rubbed off, wear and fraying at spine ends, back board is rubbed. Loose, laid in Frontispiece has previous owner inscription on reverse, damp staining at inside corners. Title page has light foxing. Faint damp staining near gutter on some pages and occasional light foxing. Otherwise, pages generally clean and unmarked. Hinge crack visible at pages 14, 144, 161, and perhaps other spots. Illustration at page 54 laid in. Pages are secure. Very readable copy with numerous illustrations. 249 pages. 8 pages of ads at the rear. $290.

   

Sense and Sensibility (and Persuasion): Philadelphia: Henry T. Coates, circa 1880. Front board and spine list Sense and Sensibility, but title page lists Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion. Maroon boards with black stamped design and title with gilt title on spine are bright, no rubbing, minimal wear, bumped rear corner. Minor bumps to spine ends. Beautiful display. Red silk bookmark has some disintegration at end. Endpapers are unmarked. Cracks at front and rear with still tight binding, Frontispiece portrait entitled “Willoughby’s Farewell.” Pages are unmarked, bright. 522 pages and 6 pages of ads. Rear free endpaper has been torn out. $250

The Bourne Identity Uncorrected Proof

The Bourne Indentity. Uncorrected proof to the first edition. Green paper cover with black type. Cover has wear and soiling. Tears along spine, circular water mark on front cover. Front corners are curling. Several pages corners are also beginning to curl. Glued binding is tight with the exception of the first eight pages, which have come loose from the cover. The pages are still glued together but are no longer attached to spine. Sticker ghost on half title page. Pages are clean, bright, unmarked, uncreased. Edges are lightly tanned. $275.  

 
The Grapes of Wrath

The Grapes of Wrath. Viking Press September 1939 ninth printing, as stated. Natural fiber cloth pictorial boards have very light wear. Faint age toning on very outer edges. Spine has deeper coloring but with no wear. The boards are in remarkable condition with no bumps, top and bottom of spine is like new. Binding is straight and tight. No dust jacket. End papers are strong and tanned. No marks inside or out. Pages are clean, bright, unmarked, uncreased. Edges have a few spots of foxing and a thumbing smudge on bottom edge. $95.

The Old Man and The Sea: The Easton Press 1990. Easton Collector’s Edition. Reddish-brown Easton leather binding with gilt and black type and design, all edges gilt, with red-brown silk moire endpapers and matching ribbon marker. Cover has no apparent wear. Interior is unmarked, tight, like new. Gilt edges on top and bottom are like new, fore edge has minor loss of gilt. Octavo. 16.5 x 24 cm. 117 pp. With black-and-white reproductions of illustrations by C.F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard. Introduction by Charles Scribner, Jr. $125.

Thinner: New American Library November 1984 First Printing, as stated, with full number line. Unclipped dust jacket in protective cover displays $12.95 price. Jacket has light edge wear and a bit of softness and minor fraying at upper corners. Pages are clean, bright, like new. Binding is tight. Feels unread. A bottom edge spot that does not impede onto pages. $55.
