Puzzles and Mysteries

We’re officially into Fall. I hope everyone had a chance to admire the Autumn Harvest Moon on Wednesday. It was a beautiful way to end the summer. To welcome the fall weather, longer evenings, and the academic aura of school days, Belleyre Books is offering three hardcover puzzle books. “The Little Pink Book of Sudoko,” “The Little Pink Book of KenKen,” and “The Little Pink Book of Crosswords,” by Will Shortz, are brand new, September 2010 publications. As you can guess, these books were published to benefit The Breast Cancer Foundation. On top of that, Belleyre Books will make a contribution to The American Cancer Society upon the sale of each book.

If you aren’t already familiar with Will Shortz, he’s an author worth noting. Shortz is the puzzle master for NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday as well as the crossword editor of The New York Times. He began publishing puzzles at 14 before he went on to get a degree in Enigmatology, the study of puzzles. Shortz is the only person in the world to hold such a degree! But don’t let the author’s mastery intimidate you, the “Pink” books include puzzles from easy to hard.

In addition to puzzles, the Belleyre bookshelves now display three copies of “The Shadow of the Wind.” This popular book is a personal favorite of mine. It sweeps you away to 1945 Barcelona where the discovery of the last existing copy of a novel begins the unravelling of the mystery behind its author and the destruction of the other copies. The richness of detail, memorable characters, and intriguing story make this book one that I highly recommend. It would also make a great book club choice.
